Community Outreach and Adult Education

The GrowHaus’ community outreach programming engages with members of our community and connects them with resources so that they can cultivate healthy and nourished families and communities.

In 2018, The GrowHaus launched a Promotora (community health worker) program and began hiring people from the community to connect neighbors to The GrowHaus’ food access programs, wellness programs, and government support services. Promotoras have deep roots in the communities served, and their knowledge and shared lived experience makes them uniquely positioned to develop trusting relationships with neighbors and serve as community navigators. As part of The GrowHaus’ commitment to providing culturally relevant services, Promotoras assists community members in English and Spanish.

Since 2020, The GrowHaus’ Promotora team has connected over 2,400 individuals living in Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea to the organization’s weekly food access program. The Promotoras team carry out all outreach and community navigation services through phone calls and text message to individuals and families who have previously engaged in the organization's programming and reach additional neighbors via pop-up events at community hubs and gathering places such as schools, recreation centers, and libraries.

The GrowHaus team has leveraged its position as a trusted community resource to connect individuals and families to government assistance programs, including SNAP, WIC, and Pandemic-EBT. The GrowHaus has a specialized team of SNAP Promotoras who have provided outreach and enrollment assistance to over 600 families via phone calls and pop-up events at community gathering spaces. Additionally, The GrowHaus connects adults living in Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea to classes and home visits that build community connections and combat social isolation, such as Zumba, nutrition, and knitting.
