“I wanted to be that familiar face that could offer my community resources they didn't even know existed.”
I’m Tania, and I’ve been a resident of Globeville for 17 years. Eight months ago, when I became an Apprentice Promotora, I saw it as a chance to give back and connect with my neighbors on a deeper level. I wanted to be that familiar face that could offer my community resources they didn't even know existed. It's crucial for community members to be familiar with the individuals providing assistance. The impact is different when the support comes from someone you know and trust, and that's what makes my job genuinely fulfilling.
“To me, creating connections through these home visits is the most valuable experience.”
As a Promotora Apprentice, I’m learning how to engage with neighbors during home visits from our veteran Promotoras, Ynés and Guadalupe. On each visit, our neighbor always opens their door and warmly welcomes us into their home. As Promotoras, we share our knowledge and listen as they share their rich wisdom. To me, creating connections through these visits is the most valuable experience.
Before The GrowHaus, I never got to take the time to create these types of relationships. I'm learning essential skills like active listening, which are invaluable personally and professionally. Before working at The GrowHaus, I was afraid to even call someone. Now, I feel more at ease, and the skills I’m learning are very important for my development as a leader. I’ve come to realize that my role is about building relationships. I feel like I am a bridge between The GrowHaus and my community. It’s a gratifying experience and I’m lucky.
